Thirty years…and counting

In 2024, San Carlos Charter will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The Charter community is commemorating this milestone with a vibrant mural that captures the spirit and inclusiveness of our community.  We invited the greater San Carlos community to come together to beautify our campus together with a special art piece.

“Portals and Vessels”

100’x16’ mural designed by Scott Boms.

Artist’s draft rendering of “Portals & Vessels” mural.

“Portals & Vessels” as described in the artist’s own words:

“The San Carlos Charter community is like “Portals” to other worlds — of learning, growth, belonging, etc. This could be taken in literal and abstract directions visually. In one, silhouettes of figures at the center are nested, each with a different concept embedded (like an onion, people have layers). In others, these could be taken in a more collage-like direction with intersecting forms that can use patterns and symbols to bring in references to the keywords outlined in the brief.

The “Vessel” forms are an abstraction of the community who come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. At the same time, vessels hold things, just as people hold space and knowledge and can capture culture, history, science and more. And the shapes these forms themselves take can depict simple representations of higher-level ideas such as growth, community, courage, resilience, friendship, collaboration and more. The simplicity of the overall concept and the shapes also serves a practical purpose in making the mural easier to produce ultimately and to balance the skill level for painting needed to actually execute the project.”
